I had an idea to have a light bar built in to the roof. So, I started building one, just to see if it would fit. Well not only did it fit, but it worked too! I drove up and down the road a few times and I thought this could actually be something!
I
began searching for someone to render a drawing and make a mold for it, but I ran into a lot of difficulties. The size was too big for most manufacturers and several wouldn’t even talk to me.
I was just about to pass on the whole deal when a friend stopped by to see how it was going. He said, “You know, my brother does all that stuff”. That was Black Diamond Extreme Engineering.
We got together, tossed around ideas, started working on the drawings, and made some prototypes. After a few changes and additions we made our first production run. Besides some initial trouble with the marker lights not being equally bright, we’ve really had no problems.
I’ve since moved into a 1000 square foot shop right next to my house and starting building and boxing up roofs. I’ve done some installs and custom builds as well.
We put product in a Spee-Dee Delivery warehouse, so we can ship same day anywhere in the United States.
Then we started building sound systems, did the same thing with that and built them out of wood for two reasons: they don’t make guitars out of plastic (we feel it has a much better sound) and I didn’t have to spend anything creating the mold.
I made it the way I wanted it and included my friends input. It didn’t take long to get it done. They have been going out as fast as I can build them and we haven’t really advertised yet. Lots of people are buying a roof and a sound system. It’s been fun, I’ve learned some things, met a lot of good people, and I hope to continue to do it.
